O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. Before moving to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady began her career modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She began her career on screen in the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988.
