O'Neil was a student in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
